About Owl Bonnet Cultural Preservation Organization
Founded on principles of respect, authenticity, and dedication to preserving the sacred traditions of the Lakota people.
Our Story
The Owl Bonnet Cultural Preservation Organization was established to address a critical need: ensuring that the sacred ceremonies and traditions of the Lakota people continue to thrive in the modern world. Named in honor of the owl bonnet, a symbol of wisdom and spiritual protection, our organization embodies the values of guardianship and reverence for cultural heritage.
We recognize that cultural preservation is not merely about maintaining practices from the past—it is about honoring living traditions that continue to provide spiritual guidance, community strength, and cultural identity. The Sun Dance, in particular, represents the heart of Lakota spirituality, and supporting this ceremony is central to our mission.
Through partnerships with tribal communities, spiritual leaders, and dedicated supporters, we work to provide the resources, protection, and advocacy needed to ensure these sacred traditions endure for future generations.
What We Do
Ceremonial Support
We provide essential resources for the Sun Dance and other sacred ceremonies, including materials, logistical support, and assistance for participants and their families.
Sacred Site Protection
We work to preserve and protect ceremonial grounds and sacred sites, ensuring they remain accessible and respected for spiritual practices.
Community Building
We foster connections between supporters and Lakota communities, creating networks of mutual respect and understanding that strengthen cultural preservation efforts.
Cultural Education
We share knowledge about Lakota traditions with respect and authenticity, helping others understand the significance of these sacred practices.
Our Approach
Community-Led
We work in partnership with Lakota communities and spiritual leaders, ensuring that all our efforts are guided by those who hold traditional knowledge and authority. We do not presume to speak for or direct these communities—we support their self-determined goals.
Respectful and Authentic
We approach all sacred traditions with deep reverence and ensure that cultural practices are represented truthfully. We protect sacred knowledge while sharing appropriate information that fosters understanding and respect.
Sustainable Impact
Our work focuses on creating lasting change that will benefit future generations. We invest in infrastructure, education, and community capacity-building to ensure cultural preservation efforts continue long into the future.
Transparent and Accountable
We maintain the highest standards of integrity in our operations. Donations are used responsibly and directly support cultural preservation efforts, with clear accountability to both our supporters and the communities we serve.
