Our Mission

The mission of the Owl Bonnet Cultural Preservation Organization is to provide the financial foundation for the continuance of Lakota cultural heritage. Specifically, we support the Wiwáŋyaŋg Wačípi — the Holy Circle Sun Dance of Yuwipi Sun Dance Chief Keith Horse Looking, Sr.—and work to protect and propagate Lakota culture, ceremonies, and ways of life for current and future generations.

We believe that cultural preservation is not just about maintaining traditions—it's about honoring the wisdom of our ancestors, supporting our communities today, and ensuring that future generations can connect with their heritage. Our vision emphasizes welcoming all people to learn and participate in Lakota traditions, ensuring these practices continue and remain accessible.

Authenticity

We maintain the integrity of traditions and ensure cultural practices are represented truthfully and accurately.

Our Cultural Preservation Efforts

Supporting the Sun Dance

The Sun Dance is one of the most sacred ceremonies of the Lakota people. We provide essential support to ensure this ceremony can continue, including resources for ceremonial grounds, materials, and support for participants and their families.

Our work helps maintain the physical and spiritual infrastructure needed for this profound ceremony of renewal, sacrifice, and community connection.

Protecting Sacred Sites

We work to preserve and protect the sacred sites where ceremonies take place. These locations hold deep spiritual significance and must be maintained with care and respect.

Through land stewardship and community partnerships, we ensure these sacred spaces remain accessible for ceremonial use while protecting them from harm.

Empowering Future Generations

We support youth programs and educational initiatives that connect young people with their cultural heritage. By fostering understanding and participation, we ensure traditions continue to thrive.

Our programs create opportunities for mentorship, learning, and active participation in cultural practices under the guidance of respected elders and spiritual leaders.

Together, We Preserve What Matters Most

Every contribution, every act of support, and every moment of understanding helps ensure that the sacred traditions of the Lakota people continue to inspire, heal, and unite communities for generations to come.
